FIRST SKYPE MEETING BETWEEN THE ABU DIS BOYS SCHOOL AND THE HAMPSTEAD SCHOOL

Children from Abu-Dis Boys School met with children from Hampstead School, Camden, for the first time today using Skype. Although the meeting was short, it was a great opportunity for the children to introduce themselves and meet their twinning partners from London and Palestine. As it was the first ever CADFA skype meeting there were a few technical problems, which will be fixed for next time. The kids had many questions and stories to ask and tell each other, but did not have enough time today, however they were excited and enthusiastic to speak more next time. The children in Dar Assadaqa left a video message for the kids in London full of good wishes for future meetings. Everyone at Dar Assadaqa is looking forward to building on this opportunity and to share more projects in the near future.

Saturday Fun

On Saturday we had a day of baking, drama and craft. The kids enjoyed designing their own bunting which we have now used to decorate Dar Assadaqa. The older kids made banners and learnt how to stencil letters.    In the afternoon we played drama games and ate the biscuits we had made earlier, we also celebrated Mousa's birthday and had a huge cake to go alongside! Yasmin has started drawing on the outside of Dar Assadaqa ready to paint a new design on it, we are looking forward to seeing the end result. We have also been collecting local art work from children, students and local women. The work is now being displaying in Dar Assadaqa.

Billy enjoying making some bunting!

Decorating Dar Assadaqa with dove birds! The kids produced some really good Palestinian flags which have now been hung up.

Having fun baking biscuits!

We ended up with rather a lot of biscuits! And rather a lot of mess!

Playing drama games, the children have classes twice in a week in which we teach them games, and they work in small groups putting together small sketches.
Making banners.

Dar Assadaqa Saturday 27/04/2013

It was our first fully planned Saturday since we had arrived in Palestine. Our first two Saturday’s had been spent with other organisations so we decided to plan ahead knowing that lots of energetic children would be attending. We decided to split the ages up into 3 groups so it wouldn’t be too chaotic and organise 3 activities which would then be rotated after an hour was spent with each group.

We organised a drop the egg challenge, English club and an art activity in which the children made animal masks. It was a great, messy day and we are looking to the next few weeks with these lovely children. We are hoping to hold a music day next Saturday where we can do some drumming and have a go at making instruments from bottles!

Drop the Egg Challenge: -

For this challenge we gave the children an egg each and five tokens. With the tokens they could buy a piece of material and the challenge was to wrap the egg so that it wouldn't break if you dropped it.

.

CRACK! Out  of 13 eggs, two didn’t break!

Mask Making!

Lots of fun was had spending the morning making animal masks, we had lions, monkeys, tigers and rabbits! Despite the glue that seemed to get everywhere it was great to see the kids getting creative using different materials to design their own masks. All ages were able to join in and hopefully we can do some more another time. Here are a few photos:

It's great to have local volunteers helping out!

Some very colourful masks were made!

fom CADFA volunteer March 2013

Yesterday at Dar Assadaqa I had a class with 20 young men about the environment in
Palestine. On the timetable for Dar Assadaqa there is a slot for the environment. But I
think in the case of Abu Dis the best way to use this time is to establish an environment
club that actually works pro-actively to make Abu Dis a better place to live. Over the
course of an hour, we developed a plan to improve the environment in and around Abu
Dis.
The first step was to build on what was discussed by the previous group of EVS
volunteers. Getting a list of names of people who come to Dar Assadaqa who would be
interested in being part of the environment club. Secondly, we decided that something
should be done about the all the rubbish in the streets and that we could arrange a time
to clean the main street in Abu Dis or university street to start with. We also agreed it
would be good to buy some seeds from the shop in Azariya/ Bethany and plant trees
such as pine and olive trees. No-one really knew where we could plant these trees but it certainly left us with food for thought.
The other important tenet of improving the environment, not just in Abu
Dis but in Palestine generally, was green education. We came up with the idea to teach
about the environment in schools because it hardly ever gets taught about in schools.
Everyone concurred that the most of effective way of persuading people to change their
attitudes was to begin with young people. There was a good idea by one of the lads to
ask someone from Al Quds university who studies the environment to give a talk at
schools in Abu Dis. Finally, we suggested we should write to the Ministry of Agriculture
in Ramallah to ask for some sort of project support.
The land is very important to people in Palestine, Palestinians take great pride farming
their land and growing their olive trees. The occupation is the main cause of
environmental degradation, as a result of the Israelis using Palestinian areas as a
rubbish dump, and a place where waste sewage from settlements collects. Water
appropriation from wells and aquifers on Palestinian land by the authorities is also a
huge problem. And of course there are no services such as rubbish collection.
However, I think by changing many peoples’ attitude toward the environment in Abu
Dis could make it a more beautiful place. In addition, we all shared the view that
protection and greater respect for the environment is an effective form of
resistance to the occupation that will have a positive impact on the lives of all
Palestinians.

Winter camp 2013

Last week was our first full week working at Dar Assadaqa. Schools were closed for a 10 day holiday, so Group 6 put on a week of activities for the children of Abu Dis, in cooperation with the Damaa Music Centre.

We started last Saturday getting to know some of the children who regularly attend Dar Assadaqa with an afternoon of games...

During the week, activities included plenty of arts and crafts...

English Club each morning...

An afternoon at the Damaa Music Centre with Ahmad Oreiqat...

And even a trip to a local farm!

And when the kids went home, the big kids got some play in too.
