Women's trip to Irtas

On Friday, 11th April, the Women’s Committee organised a journey to Irtas Village for the Lettuce Festival (Ghas Festival).

50 women, their children and their teacher (Mr Ross) took two buses, leaving the Friendship House at 9am Friday morning. It took almost one hour to reach the historic Soloman’s Pools where we stopped to have breakfast.

After breakfast we listened to a guide who told us about the history of the area. It was very interesting! Some of the women then went back to the bus, but many of us walked to Irtas by walking over the mountains. We loved walking through the mountains, the weather was perfect!

Last year, we walked through the valley along a straight road. However, this year we had to go through difficult fields and mountains because the land and the road had been taken by the Israelis for the settlement and for the wall. Because of this some of the women fell and hurt themselves (my sister fell and bruised her face and another girl hurt ankle), but even so we all helped each other, tried to forget the hardships and just enjoyed ourselves.

When we arrived in Irtas we visited a big, old church (but we can not remember the name!) which was very beautiful. We then went to Irtas Centre to rest and to have our lunch in the cool. We also spoke to an old man called, Abu Latfy. He amazed us because even though he was an old man he was able to walk with us the long way through the mountains and he also knew many facts and stories about the local area.

We then visited the museum and looked at the women’s hand crafts. Unfortunately, it was not as big as last year because the women did not have the money for all of the materials.

We then watched the village party. It began at 3 o’clock and went until 7 o’clock. We saw many different types of Palestinian Dabka, listened to a very good and entertaining singer and ate ‘dawale’ (grape leaves with rice). During the dabka we were all thrilled to see that a small child was leading all of the men in dabka – he was fantastic!

After all of the dancing, we went to a greenhouse to buy ghas (lettuce). 5 sheckels for one, very big, fresh and delicious lettuce!

Then we collected all of the people and went back to Abu Dis on the bus. On the way, we were stopped at an impromptu checkpoint and the small bus had to turn around and go another way.

I am pleased that all of us had such a great time and we want to prepare for another journey somewhere different next month.
